Internal Erosion Experiments on Sandy Gravel Alluvium in an Embankment Dam Foundation Emphasizing Horizontal Seepage and High Surcharge Pressure

For an internally unstable soil, fine particles can move in the pore channels between coarse along with seepage flow; this process is termed internal erosion. To evaluate stability and erosion behavior of sandy gravel alluvium beneath suspended cutoff wall embankment dam foundation, a series horizontal tests were carried out on four representative gradations layer using large-scale high-pressure apparatus. The evolutionary trends hydraulic conductivity, ratio particles, volumetric strain under stepwise increasing loading obtained. results showed that specimens different exhibited distinct properties permeability, particle loss, deformation, depending gradation continuity content, which be attributed to difference composition soil skeleton arrangement particles. continuous or relatively high surcharge pressure significantly improve their stability. By contrast, situations gap-graded low no considerable improvement was found because stress mainly borne by skeleton. practical implications experimental demonstrated evaluating safety zone foundation.
